Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

I asked three of my colleagues who are all different nationalities and races to give me there perspectives on culture and diversity to give me their definition of culture and diversity.

Friend #1 Quinn
Culture- where your beliefs, attitudes, and core values are commonly shared by a group
Diversity-      Culture race, ethnic, background, gender sexual orientation, religion, politics or individual uniqueness

Friend #2- Emma
Culture- What parents pass down to children culture, race, religion, language, socioeconomic standing, and gender. The way you dress and celebrate holidays.

Diversity-      Accepting the differences children bring to the classroom and accepting those differences so that the children can be confident in who they are and their abilities

Friend #3- Jenny
Culture- lifestyle, it can include everything from music,  language food . It can be shown to identify with a certain people who share some beliefs. To me, it means feeling accepted and part of a community no matter where you are if you have the same culture.

Diversity-  what results from different cultures , religions and people coming together; being unique; doing what makes you...  you

All of the examples provided are characteristics of diversity and culture that I have studied in this course. People from all different walks of life and with different backgrounds shared the same definition of what culture and diversity mean to them
The one thing that everyone seemed to want was to belong to the group and to be able to share things they have in common with each other. There wasn’t anything that they omitted from their examples. The answers that they gave were all similar, and it reflected on how people are different and just want to be able to share their beliefs and customs with others.
My thinking on the topic of culture and diversity were reinforced by the answers of my colleagues.  I love being diverse and having a uniqueness about myself that is different from others. Our typical pains and joys are what bring us together, but our diversity makes us unique. I love sharing my culture with others and learning about other cultures. Embracing diversity is a great way to unite everyone under one umbrella. We should learn to appreciate the difference that exists in our lives.

  1. Anita,

It seems as everyone you questioned had pretty much the same overall view on what culture and diversity is. I also love being a diverse individual and being unique. I use to think I was weird growing up until I understood everyone is different. Great post.
