My Family Culture

I can only image how I would feel to be uprooted from the country where I was born and raised because of a major catastrophe. To have to choose between what I wanted to take and keep was very hard. Material things can be replaced. I rather have the love of my family and my faith to help me start over.

My first item I would take is my family bible. Believing that all things are possible and having faith is very important in African- American Culture. The family is the most important, and as long as we are together and have faith you can withstand any obstacles or detours that may stand in your way.

Next, I would take photos of my family and where I lived to remind me how things were before the catastrophe. Having these pictures give me something to build on and to cherish the memories of those who may not be with us. Sometimes memories may fade or become distant but if you have pictures they can be worth a thousand words.

Finally, I would take my birth certificates so that I can prove who I am in case there are questions about my national origin, ethnicity or culture.

If I had to choose one item from the three material items to I would choose take my birth certificates.  The faith that I have instilled in me cannot be forgotten or take away because I do not have the bible physically in my hand. My family is with me so they can help me build on the memories. The birth certificate is the one thing that I have to help me reestablish who I am and where I come from in case we are allowed to return to our country in the future.

I learned from doing this activity that the things that are most important to me in life is being with my family and holding on to my faith.  I’ve learned to embrace that we all have to live in this world together.  We have identities that make us different but, many similar things make us the same.

  1. Hello Anita!

This assignment really made me think about how I would feel if I found myself removed from my home and family, like so many people today. I enjoyed reading your post and you are absolutely correct--things can always be replaced, but the love and support of family is what should really be treasured.
    Thank you for sharing!

  2. Anita,
I find that we had many similarities in our responses to this assignment. I too found that the most important thing to me would be making sure that my family is safe and that we remain together. While I was thinking about things that I would bring, I found that it was difficult for me to come up with items because you are right when you say that material items can be replaced.

  3. Dear Anita,

Hahaha you know your first two items are exactly the same as mine. The bible and the pictures. Amazing. Yes I agree the word of God can easily keep someone from depression and trauma.
    God bless you.

  4. WOW Anita!!! It is mind blowing we have the exact same three items and in the same exact order!!! Maybe being apart of the American culture, we all have the same values. When I thought about this question I did not know what I would take. Once I thought long enough I realized the top three things I cared about was my religion, family, and foundation. Great post!
