Sharing Web Resources

National Black Child Development Institute
http://nbcdi.org/
The National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI)  is a nonprofit organization that provides and supports programs, workshops, and resources for African American children, their parents and communities.  It focuses on being the forerunner for promoting positive change for the health, welfare, and educational needs of all African American children, They strive to improve and advance the quality of life for African American children and their families through education and advocacy ( NBCDI ,n.d.)

What captured my attention on the website are the NBCDI initiatives : Policy; Early Care and Education; Health; Family Engagement; Literacy and Child Welfare. The main focuses under Early Care and Education related directly to the topics that we were discussing this week involving changing demographics and diversity. These issues must be addressed if we are to create culturally, linguistically and developmentally appropriate programs and practices.

                                          .
                           Main Areas of Focus
·    o   Ensuring cultural and racial diversity in the workforce
·     o   Retaining well-qualified teachers
·     o    Developing culturally, linguistically and developmentally valid and reliable measurement tools for
young children and the classrooms in which they learn
·     o    Encouraging states, districts and schools to embed professional development opportunities that support a understanding of families’ race and culture
·     o    Educating teachers from all backgrounds how to build and strengthen relationships with parents and the community

I look forward to receiving their newsletter and a recap of  their National Conference which was held in Washington, DC in October 2015.
