Personal Childhood Web

Personal Childhood Web

These are some of  the most important people in life. They helped shape the person that I am today.

My mom is the center of my life. Without her, none of my life would be possible. My values, ethics, and morals all are inherited from her. She always told us how she loved us and that everything would be okay no matter how much we struggled. I learned early that family comes first. She worked hard to keep clothes on our back and food on the table. It was only with her support that I was able to start my military career. She helped take care of my children and my siblings children. Today she is taking care of our children’s children. It truly does take a village to raise children and we have a Queen who does it perfectly. She stressed how important education is and always pushed us to do our best. I remember when I was a child the Philadelphia public schools were on strike. Of course, we were happy because we thought we were going just play all day. My mom was not going to stand for that. She made us watch “The Electric Company” and then tell her what it was all about that day.

My Aunt Heloise Roberts is my mom’s only sister. She was the backup whenever my Mom needed help. She loved us as if we were her children. My aunt introduced me to my religious preference. She took me to church every Sunday when I was young. She always let me know that I was going to grow up to be a very special person.  We say she is the Matriarch of the family because she is the oldest living relative and the wisest.

My Siblings- I could not have survived my childhood years without my sisters and brother. We grew up in a rough part of Philadelphia and we had to make sure that we looked out for each Even though I was oldest of seven siblings my younger sisters & brother were a big part of my childhood. We did everything together. We looked out for each other and could not have survived if we did not.

My motto to “live my life to its fullest” is in memory of two of my sisters, Yvette & Mickey. Rest in Peace my Sisters. We miss you!

My Dad- even though my Mom and Dad did not live together he would come get us for the summer to stay with him. I learned early that just because a parent does not live with you or take care of you that does not mean that they don’t love you.He always told us that he loved us. He tried to make up for missing our childhood. I treasure the time that I had with him.  He will be four years since he passed away on the 29th of this month.

My sixth grade teacher Mrs. Clark- she instilled pride and confidence in me. We had class presidents back then and she encouraged me to run for class president. She would tell me I was smart and could be anything I wanted to be if I put my heart to it. I was surprised when I won the election.

  1. Anita,
I love that most of the people who were most influential in your life is your family! Family is super important and it is the same in my life. My family has been there from day one and though they aren't perfect and didn't do everything right all the time, I know that I wouldn't be the woman I am today if it wasn't for them! I also have a similar situation with my father. My parents divorced when I was young and my sister and I lived with my mom. Even though we did not live with my dad, he mad a conscious effort to make sure we knew that he loved us and nothing was going to change that.

  2. Anita,
I think it is wonderful that you were able to provide pictures of those who have influenced you. I also think it is so great that you were able to have such a great teacher who instilled that pride and confidence for you. Family is so important, but it is unique to have a teacher influence your life greatly, too.

  3. I also think that with the pictures the story just comes out to the open. I should say that I am very proud of your mom. She is truly the Queen in your family. She was such a strong and dedicated woman to be able to take care of you and your siblings. She showed you how precious you were by showing her love. Really her love was unconditional and still is.

  4. Anita,
What a great family you have. You mom is a great person and the help she provides you and your siblings is amazing. You and your siblings were there for each other to push each other to do better for yourselves and that is great. In your situation growing up that support was needed to survive the temptations around you. Great pictures!
