I enjoyed doing this assignment. It is always fascinating to see how others perceive you. I decided to get a perception of my communication skills from a colleague and one from my daughter. Rather surprisingly both of them evaluated me and perceived of me the same way that I perceived of myself. I think that my daughter’s perception of me could have easily gone to the next category in the Listening Styles Profile. My colleague and I talked about difficult it is to evaluate yourself  and how our own perceptions of ourselves may be biased.

In the past, I was more action- oriented than people oriented when I was in the military. I was surprised that my perception in the Listening Style Category changed and is  more people- oriented because I always like to have clear cut communication and a plan of action.( Rubin, Graham, Perse, & Seibold, 2009).

This assignment gave me an insight and made me reflect on how the type of job that you have may change the way you communicate with people. I think that if I had done the assessments about ten years ago, there would be a different outcome. I know that my communication style has changed, and I have become a better listener. I have also gained insight that is simply talking does not make you a good communicator,  you also have to be a good listener. The Verbal Aggressive Assessment was an eye opener because it showed me how that we may have to maintain boundaries and set limits when communicating with others. It takes practice to become a good communicator, and this course has enhanced my skill ( Rubin, Palmgreen, & Sypher, 2009).
